Jonathan Mitchell, history teacher at MHS, was honored on April 10 at the State D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) banquet in Des Moines as the Outstanding American History Teacher of the Year. Jonathan submitted an application to local Ashley Chapter D.A.R. and was chosen as their nominee, and from there he was selected as the state winner. In addition, he was named third in the entire nation. In thanking the D.A.R. for this honor, Jonathan explained the main components of his teaching philosophy: positive professional relationships, regular communication with parents, student-centered, engaging lesson plans, and authentic student learning opportunities. He also shared that he communicates to his students that "history happens in Iowa." From ISU alum Carrie Chapman Catt, founder of the League of Women Voters, to the floods of 2008 and the derecho of 2020, to Caitlin Clark, Jonathan makes sure his students know that history happens in Iowa.
