We have begun our 2nd semester and the students are working hard learning new skills and polishing old skills. In math the students are working on place value and understanding whether a number is greater than, less than, or equal to. Here you see Miss Haag’s class playing one of our favorite games, Top It, with a twist! The students had to use the correct comparison symbol before collecting the cards if they won!
In science we are in our Sound and Light unit. The students have been experimenting with what makes sound. They have used cups, tongue depressors, and rubber bands to make vibrations and tuning forks in order to see vibrations! The students can touch a tuning fork to a ping pong ball and watch it bounce. Did you know if you put a tuning fork in water, it will cause a splash? In this picture, we see Ms. Russell’s class after experimenting with a tone generator to watch the vibrations.
The students have been working hard all year on learning their heart words. Heart words are words that do not follow the normal phonics rules. They are rule breakers! We learn the parts of the word that follow the phonics rules and then we learn the “heart part” which is the part we just have to remember. We do many activities throughout the week to practice and learn these words. Pictured here you see Miss Kasparek’s class doing an activity called “Inside Outside Circle” where students have to come up with multiple sentences using our heart words for the week.
