Reading Support

Longfellow Elementary has supports in place to help students who may need additional instruction in reading and math. Mrs. DeWulf and Mrs. Shie are our Reading Strategists, and Mrs. Hoke is our Math Strategist.

Students receive extra support in the area of reading based on their FAST score and math support based on classroom assessments.   If students qualify, they will be pulled from their classrooms during independent work time in a small group of 2-4 students for 15 minutes each day. During this time, Mrs. DeWulf and Mrs. Shie use research-based strategies that are designed for each student.  The activities that are used during instruction are hands-on and provide students with opportunities for success. Weekly assessments are given to make sure the instruction being provided is working.

Students meet with Mrs. Hoke, our Math Strategist, for 20 minutes five times per week. The small group size is limited to 4-5 students.  Activities are then planned based on individual student needs.  Although Mrs. Hoke is working on the same skills as the regular classroom teacher, she will use a different approach rather than repeat what has already been done in their classroom. Many hands-on activities are used, and students are given multiple opportunities to solidify their learning and understanding of math concepts.

Mrs. Hoke also co-teaches with every 1st and 2nd grade classroom teacher, either once or twice a week. She comes into the classroom during math time to help teach math lessons, to provide additional support to any student during math class, and to help facilitate hands-on activities and math games.

Both Title 1 Reading and the math support program assist students in developing skills needed to be successful.
