The library at Starry Elementary has been a busy place this year. Students are not only checking out 1-2 times a week, but they are learning and building on library skills. Depending on the grade level, students learn how to find books in the library using shelf markers, the responsibility of returning a book every week, fiction vs. nonfiction, award-winning books, digital citizenship, and research skills.
This year we have also been focusing on building some computer science skills through coding. We have done some of this through “unplugged” activities like giving specific directions for a character in a book we read to get to a destination.
This month we also started using Bee-Bots in class. Bee-Bots are small robots on wheels that look like bumblebees. The students have specific jobs and work together to code the Bee-Bot to move to locations on a mat. They love it and can’t wait to get started every week!
We will continue to work on these various skills along with some new ones as we start the 2024 year as we hope to make the library a fun, engaging, learning space for all of our Starry students!
