As part of the STEM-BEST Program, Francis Marion Intermediate 4th grade teacher Cathy Miller, and students Vivie and Ava had a special opportunity in Des Moines today to demonstrate their use of micro:bits with circuits. The STEM BEST Award provided planning time for Computer Science Standards integration into current 3rd and 4th Grade Science Foss Kits. Funding also provided time for training teaching staff, and the equipment of micro:bits and the electronic kit by Monk Makes. STEM BEST provides an opportunity to connect with community partnerships where students learned more about future focused skills and career opportunities.
At Marion Independent, we teach our students about Computer Science and STEM. Science and engineering jobs comprise about a quarter of all jobs in Iowa (NSF). In 2023-2024, 78% of all students statewide indicated they were very interested or somewhat interested in pursuing a STEM career.
