King Tut

CKLA stands for Core Knowledge Language Arts. This is a new literacy curriculum being used at MISD. There are two components to instruction that we focus on at Starry. The first component is referred to as “Skills”. This focuses on phonics skills such as word patterns, decoding, reading decodable text, and spelling words. The other part of CKLA is referred to as “Knowledge”. Each unit has a content focus such as world civilizations, the human body, fairy tales, and more. During this time students listen to stories and discuss character, setting, comprehension, and other story components.

First-grade students recently learned about Early World Civilization in our Knowledge Unit. A significant focus of our learning was Ancient Egypt, King Tutankhamun, and other pharaohs. The students enjoyed learning about cuneiform and hieroglyphics and had the opportunity to practice writing their names in each of the writing forms.

To end the unit the students created their own King Tut mask. They used gold paint on the masks and then colored the striped headdress.

Some of the students already took their masks home and some still have theirs displayed in the hallway.
